A 2.5-KM road and a drainage line are set to be constructed at the Deonar dumping ground, along its periphery adjacent to human habitat, at a cost of Rs 33 crore.

After continuous fires at the dumping ground, the High Court, in 2016, asked the civic body to take steps to increase safety and appointed a committee to suggest measures. The committee suggested fencing of the ground, installation of CCTV cameras and stationing of security guards. While the BMC already installed cameras and appointed security guards, there have been instances when the vehicles of security guards could not reach the spot in emergency situations due to the bad condition of the road.

“It is difficult to use the road on rainy days. Many times vehicles of security guards cannot reach the point in emergency situations. So, the committee suggested constructing a road as well as a gutter to drain out water from the dumping ground,” said a BMC official.

Deonar dumping ground is spread across 120 hectares and has a periphery of 6 km, of which 2.5 is adjacent to human habitat and the remaining 3.5 km is on the side of the creek. As per the plan, the civic body will construct a 2.5-km peripheral road along with a one metre by one metre RCC stormwater drainage line. The work is supposed to be finished within 16 months (excluding monsoon) and the defect liability period will be three years.

The tender process for the same is complete and the proposal will be discussed in the standing committee meeting on Friday for the final approval.
