The BMC this year switched to the India Post for its scheme for girl students in its schools. The process for creating fixed deposits for the same took a lot of time in banks, and hence the BMC decided to deposit the money in the post office.

“This year, the BMC deposited R6.13 crore for 15,352 girl students. It means the BMC gives R1 per day as attendance allowance for every girl student. The FD for the same will mature when the girl completes 18 years of age,” an official said about the scheme, which was started to encourage girls to go to school.

“From the start of this scheme, the BMC deposited the money in nationalised as well as private banks. But the process took a long time. Sometimes it took a year,” BMC Education Officer Rajesh Kankal said. “So this year, we started depositing money in the Post Office and processes were completed in a few weeks,” Kankal added.

The BMC pays Rs 5,000 to every girl who attends school from Std I to Std VIII, as attendance allowance. It had also sponsored degree and diploma education for the first 25 ranked students from its schools. They received a minimum of Rs 25,000 each or their full fees were paid.
