PM Modi to attend Maharashtra govt swearing-in on Dec 5

Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi is set to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the new Mahayuti government in Maharashtra on the evening of December 5. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Devendra Fadnavis has emerged as the frontrunner for the chief minister's (CM) post, news agency PTI reported.  The ceremony will take place at 5 pm in Azad Maidan, Mumbai, according to state BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule. Bawankule confirmed in a post on X that PM Modi will be present at the swearing-in ceremony. — Chandrashekhar Bawankule (@cbawankule) November 30, 2024 Although no official announcement has been made regarding the chief ministerial candidate, BJP sources indicate that Fadnavis, who has served as CM twice and deputy CM in the previous Eknath Shinde-led government, is most likely to assume the role, according to PTI. Shinde, the current caretaker CM, had reportedly travelled to his hometown in Dare, Satara district, a day earlier, amid speculation that he was dissatisfied with how the new government was shaping up. An aide confirmed that Shinde had fallen ill with a temperature of 105°F.  Shinde unwell, says Shiv Sena leader Shiv Sena leader Shambhuraj Desai, from Satara district, said Shinde had returned from Delhi with other party leaders on Friday morning after meeting top BJP officials. Since his return, Shinde had been unwell, suffering from a cough and cold. "Exertion affected him, so we advised him to take rest," he added. Sanjay Shirsat, a Shiv Sena leader close to Shinde, insisted that the home portfolio should be given to his party. Speaking to PTI, Shirsat also claimed there were attempts to sideline Shinde. Meanwhile, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Ajit Pawar stated that the CM will be from BJP, with deputy CMs from the Shiv Sena and his own party. Pawar has served as deputy CM in previous governments. A BJP leader stated that a meeting would be held on December 2 to elect the party's leader of the legislature, with Fadnavis likely to be appointed as CM. Shinde, who has served as CM since June 2022, attended a meeting of ruling alliance leaders with senior BJP leader Amit Shah in Delhi on Thursday evening. He had previously made it clear that he would accept any decision made by the top BJP leadership regarding the CM's post. Shinde is under pressure from some Shiv Sena leaders who believe he should not be made deputy CM, given his previous tenure as CM. However, other party leaders insist that he must be part of the new government. Differences within Mahayuti made Shinde return to village: Sanjay Raut The Mahayuti alliance, comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP, secured a landslide victory in the November 23 state assembly elections. The BJP alone won 132 seats, followed by Shiv Sena with 57 and NCP with 41. The majority figure in the 288-member House is 145, meaning the alliance has comfortably surpassed this threshold.  However, the formation of the government has been delayed due to disagreements over the chief ministerial post. Although Shinde appeared to have relinquished his claim to the top position, tensions resurfaced when a meeting of the allies on Friday was postponed, and he instead went to his village. The NCP has already declared that Fadnavis is acceptable to them as chief minister. In contrast, Sanjay Raut from the rival Shiv Sena (UBT) claimed the "unnatural verdict" had delayed the selection of the chief minister and suggested that differences within the ruling alliance had driven Shinde to return to his village. Meanwhile, leaders of the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition, which suffered a defeat in the November 20 elections, expressed solidarity with social activist Baba Adhav. Adhav, who began a protest in Pune three days ago, is calling attention to the alleged misuse of Electronic Voting Machines in the recent elections. Senior NCP leader Sharad Pawar accused the ruling government of misusing power and money to control the election machinery. (With PTI inputs)

Nirav Modi says ‘ signatures not mine ‘, challenges Bank of India’s $9 mn claim

Nirav Modi challenged the claim of Bank of India (BOI) that he stood as guarantor to the overdraft facility extended to his Firestar Diamond Group to the tune of $9 million between 2012 and 2017. Appearing before Deputy High Court judge David Bailey on Friday, Nirav Modi raised questions about the genuineness of the signatures on documents and sought the court’s approval to inspect documents and stay the proceedings.  In May 2018, Bank of India approached the high court in London seeking to recover $9 million that was given to Firestar Diamond Group of which Nirav Modi was the CEO. The bank managed to get a summary judgment against Firestar Diamond in March 2024 and is now seeking to hold Modi accountable as he was the guarantor to the $9 million that was given to his company. The Bank of India case against Firestar Diamond Group and Nirav Modi pertains to the huge fraud he allegedly perpetrated against several Indian banks to the tune of $1.8 billion. Punjab National Bank was the worst hit as it emerged that Nirav Modi obtained fraudulent letters of undertaking allowing him to secure overseas loans without collateral. He faces several cases in India and the US.   “So, your position is that you do not recall signing them,” the judge asked Modi, who replied that the services of a handwriting expert would be needed. Tom Beasley, the bank’s counsel, told the court that it was a ploy to delay the case and that five years ago when the case was filed Nirav Modi had admitted that Firestar Diamond had borrowed money, and he stood guarantor to the facility. The court reserved judgment on Modi’s application to inspect documents and stay the current proceedings.     “This claim was brought in 2019 and today we are at the end of 2024. I have been incarcerated for six years, and I am the longest-serving unconvicted (sic) prisoner in the UK. I do not know how long this will continue. Hopefully, I will be able to get bail, and if I get it, I will be able to defend better,” he told the court. Court documents filed by Milan Kapadia, the solicitor for the Bank of India suggest that the bank suspects Nirav Modi still has access to substantial assets and money and hence they want to pursue him.  Nirav Modi has been in prison since he was arrested in March 2019 to face extradition proceedings at the request of India. Modi is accused of defrauding Indian banks to the tune of $1.8 billion. The courts in the UK have agreed to his extradition and he has exhausted all legal avenues. However, by virtue of “confidential proceedings” he has managed to stall his extradition.  At one point during the argument, Nirav Modi made a plea for access to a laptop. Seeking a level playing field he told the court, “If I do not have access to a laptop, he also [Beasley] should not have access to one. He has tanks and missiles, and I have wooden sticks.”  Judge David Bailey sympathised with Nirav Modi but said that it is not for him to make an order for a laptop to be made available to him.   For the first time, Nirav Modi confidently claimed that he “might never be extradited to India.” “Extradition was ordered in 2020 and by rule, the [Indian] government had 7 to 14 days to extradite me, but here I am in 2024,” he said. Modi also pointed out that his continuous incarceration for close to six years would mean he would hardly have any jail term in India if he was pronounced guilty. “The probability of me going to India is very low.” The Bank of India case against Firestar Diamond Group and Nirav Modi pertains to the huge fraud he allegedly perpetrated against Indian Banks. As part of the same proceedings, Bank of India managed to get a summary judgment against Firestar Diamond (Dubai) in March 2024 and is now seeking to hold Modi accountable as he was the guarantor to the $9 million that was given to his company. 2018Year BOI approached HC in London

Do they want Central rule in Maharashtra: Shiv Sena (UBT) slams Mahayuti

As suspense continues over the appointment of Maharashtra’s next Chief Minister (CM), Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader Anant Dubey on Saturday criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Mahayuti alliance, over the delay in government formation despite having a clear mandate in the recently concluded elections.   Speaking to ANI, Dubey said, "Do they [Mahayuti] want Central rule in Maharashtra? Elections were held on November 20, and the results were announced on November 23. It has been a week since then, yet there is no government in the state. They have a clear mandate but don't know who the CM will be. When will they start addressing the needs of the people? We fail to understand their plan of action. In every other state, they declared the CM face on time, so why is Maharashtra being treated differently."   Reports on Friday suggested that caretaker CM Eknath Shinde was "upset" and had travelled to his hometown amid the delay in government formation. However, Shiv Sena leader Uday Samant dismissed these claims and assured that Shinde would return soon and that the Maharashtra cabinet would be finalised shortly.   "The reports of him being upset are media speculations. We were with Eknath Shinde until early morning. He will return tomorrow. Meetings are not limited to physical gatherings; they can also happen via video conferencing or mobile. As Eknath Shinde has stated, the Maharashtra cabinet will be finalised soon," Uday Samant told ANI.   On Thursday night, Shinde, who is Maharashtra’s caretaker, along with Deputy CMs Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP National President JP Nadda in New Delhi.   According to ANI, Shinde described the meeting as "good and positive" and hinted at another discussion to finalise the CM's post. "This was the first meeting. We had discussions with Amit Shah and JP Nadda. There will be another Mahayuti meeting in Mumbai, where a decision on the CM will be taken," Shinde said.   The Maharashtra Assembly election results, announced on November 23, handed the Mahayuti alliance a resounding victory. However, despite securing a clear majority, the alliance has yet to name its CM, leaving the state’s political future hanging in the balance. (With ANI inputs)

Italian Navy’s sail training ship and Vice-Admiral visit Mumbai

Vice-Admiral Antonio Natale, Commander Naval Personnel Education of the Italian Navy, and the Italian Navy’s sail training ship ITS Amerigo Vespucci are on a visit to Mumbai.    Vice-Admiral Antonio Natale, who is on a five-day visit to Mumbai from from November 28 to December 3, met with Vice-Admiral Sanjay J Singh, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, on November 29. The two officers discussed enhancing interoperability and cooperation in the maritime domain. The Italian Admiral also laid a wreath at the Gaurav Stambh in Naval Dockyard, Mumbai, to pay homage to the sacrifices of Indian naval personnel.   Coinciding with the Admiral's visit, the iconic sail training ship ITS Amerigo Vespucci has been docked at Indira Dock in Mumbai from November 26 to December 2 as part of its global tour. The ship, under the command of Captain Giuseppe Lai, embarked on its journey from Italy in July 2023 and is scheduled to visit over 30 ports worldwide before returning in February 2025.   During its stay in Mumbai, Captain Lai met with Rear Admiral Rahul Vilas Gokhale, Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet, to exchange insights on the significance of sail training in both navies and share experiences from the ship’s current voyage.   A highlight of the ship’s visit is the 'Villaggio Italia (Italian Village),' set up near the ship’s berth at Indira Dock. This cultural exhibition showcases Italy’s art, heritage, and traditions, offering visitors a glimpse into the rich culture of the European maritime nation.   India and Italy, both ancient civilisations with rich cultural heritages, share a robust connection at multiple levels, including significant bilateral trade and growing defence cooperation. As two maritime nations with shared interests, the deepening collaboration between their navies reflects the strengthening of diplomatic ties.   The presence of Vice-Admiral Natale and ITS Amerigo Vespucci in Mumbai underscores the importance of multi-domain cooperation and highlights the enduring relationship between the two nations. The visit is expected to further mutual understanding and bolster maritime security and training initiatives.

Maharashtra election results murder of democracy: Nana Patole

State Congress President Nana Patole on Saturday claimed that the Maharashtra election results reflect lack of transparency, and said the government and the Election Commission need to clear people's doubts they have raised over the poll process. He termed the verdict of the Maharashtra polls a "murder of democracy". In a post on X, the Congress leader said he spoke to social activist Baba Adhav, who has been protesting in Pune against the alleged misuse of electronic voting machines (EVMs) in the recently-held Maharashtra elections. Adhav, who is in his 90s, began his three-day protest at Phule Wada, the residence of social reformer Jyotiba Phule, in the city on Thursday. "There is a lack of transparency in the Maharashtra election results. Our stand is that this verdict is a murder of democracy. When people are questioning the fairness of poll process, it is the responsibility of the Election Commission and the government to clear their doubts," Patole said on the social media post. "Senior social activist Dr Baba Adhav has been protesting against this at Mahatma Phule Wada in Pune. Called Dr Adhav and expressed solidarity with him in his agitation and assured that I was with him to save democracy," he added. In the November 20 assembly polls, the ruling Mahayuti registered a resounding victory and retained power in the state, pocketing a whopping 230 of the 288 assembly seats. Recovering from its Lok Sabha elections losses, the BJP emerged as the single largest party, winning 132 seats, the Shiv Sena 57 and the NCP 41 seats. In the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), the Shiv Sena (UBT) won 20 seats, the Congress 16 and the NCP (SP) candidates won 10 seats. Following the results, the opposition parties have been alleging that the ruling parties indulged in manipulation of EVMs in order to win the elections. Sharad Pawar questions EVM vote discrepancy, says lacks proof at the moment

Nationalist Congress Party (SP) Chief Sharad Pawar on Saturday alleged that there were irregularities in votes of Electronic Voting Machine (EVMs) in Maharashtra Elections 2024, however they do not have proof for this claim, ANI reported. "This has happened for the first time, the elections held in the country have made people very restless, there is disappointment among the people...Every day at 11:00 am, the opposition leaders raise questions in the Parliament. They put forward their point but their demands are not being accepted in the Parliament and this clearly means that Parliamentary democracy is not being followed properly. If it continues like this, then it is not right and for this, we will have to go among the people and make them aware," Sharad Pawar told ANI reporters. "There is some difference in the votes of EVMs but at the moment I do not have any proof in this regard. Some people have demanded recounting. Whatever is possible in this matter will be done. Some people have applied for recounting. Let's see what happens in that but I do not have much hope from this," he added. The opposition party and leaders have raised questions over EVMs following the State assembly elections held earlier this month. Claiming that the "integrity of the entire electoral process is being severely compromised," Congress on Friday attacked the Election Commission and vowed to launch a "national movement", ANI reported. "The Congress Working Committee (CWC) believes the integrity of the entire electoral process is being severely compromised. Free and fair elections is a constitutional mandate that is being called into serious question by the partisan functioning of the Election Commission. Increasing sections of society are becoming frustrated and deeply apprehensive. The Congress will take up these public concerns as a national movement," the Congress said in a statement. Notably, Congress-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) saw a huge setback in the recent Maharashtra Elections held on November 20, as the party managed to secure only 16 seats out of the 288 assembly seats while its ally Shiv Sena (UBT) won 20 seats and NCP (SP) won 10 seats, ANI reported. The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance emerged victorious with 132 seats, while its allies Eknath Shine-led Shiv Sena and the Ajit Pawar-led NCP secured 57 and 41 seats, respectively. (With inputs from ANI)
