The relative of one of the patients admitted to Bhandup’s Sunrise Hospital had heard the fire alarm and alerted the staff, but they allegedly ignored him. In fact they allegedly told him to relax and said the alarm rings multiple times ‘just like that’. The police investigating the Bhandup hospital fire have recorded the statement of the relative of a patient, that highlights the gross negligence of the hospital authorities.

A major fire broke out in Dreams the Mall, Bhandup on the night of March 25. It started on the first floor and spread to the third floor of the mall, where Sunrise Hospital is located. The incident resulted in the death of 11 patients and injured 10. The Bhandup police have filed an FIR in the incident and booked six persons including the directors of the mall and hospital.
Until now the police have recorded the statements of 30 people, including patients and their relatives. One of the relatives of the patient has told them in his statement, “We heard a fire alarm around 11pm. I went to the nurse and told her about it. I was told no need to worry about the alarm as it goes on sometimes 'just like that'. I even approached the authorities at the hospital, they also ignored me. When the smoke reached the hospital everyone panicked."
There were 78 patients in the hospital at the time of the incident and some of relatives who had stayed back to look after them. The police are trying to record the statements of all the patients and their relatives, and the medical staff of the hospital. ACP (Mulund Division) is leading the probe.
FIR against banquet halls?
The Bhandup police have filed an FIR in the fire incident and are in the process of booking the owners of the three banquet halls in the mall, as in all they had 45 LPG cylinders with them when the blaze broke out. “This is gross negligence on the part of halls. There was no fire NOC to keep the cylinders putting lives of patients as well as relatives in the hospital in danger. These halls held marriages on a regular basis. It could have turned fatal for those people as well," a senior police officer said.
