We freed Shiv Sena from those who betrayed Balasaheb Thackeray's ideals: Shinde

Addressing the Dussehra rally at Azad Maidan in Mumbai, Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde on Saturday said that his camp freed the Shiv Sena from those who betrayed Balasaheb Thackeray's ideals. CM Shinde said, "We freed Shiv Sena from those who betrayed Balasaheb Thackeray's ideals," according to the PTI. The Shiv Sena (UBT) faction led by Uddhav Thackeray and Shiv Sena-led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Saturday evening held separate Dussehra rallies. The Shiv Sena (UBT) rally was held at Shivaji Park while the Ekanth Shinde faction's rally was held at Azad Maidan. Both factions aimed to show their parties strength through the rallies ahead of the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly election 2024. CM Shinde, while addressing the rally said that Maha Vikas Aghadi's (MVA) Lok Sabha poll success in Maharashtra was accidental and not permanent. Referring to Uddhav Thackeray, CM Shinde also said that the previous CM said only eligible residents of Dharavi be rehabilitated, but I included all 2.10 lakh people, according to the PTI. CM Shinde said that the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) was like a flash in the pan which won't be replicated in the upcoming assembly polls. Addressing the Dussehra rally of Shiv Sena at Azad Maidan ground in south Mumbai, Shinde likened the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) with the Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM, suggesting Muslim appeasement politics. "Maha Vikas Aghadhi's Lok Sabha poll success in Maharashtra was accidental, not permanent. Shiv Sena won 7 seats in a direct fight against Sena (UBT) in the Lok Sabha elections, restricting them to six constituencies. This success shows we are the real Shiv Sena," Shinde added, as per the PTI. Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) faction leader Sanjay Nirupam had earlier targeted Uddhav Thackeray and said that he has sidelined Hindutva after allying with Congress. "Shiv Sena rally has a historical context. When Balasaheb used to address the Dussehra rally, he used to give his views on Hindutva to the Shiv Sainiks. There were strong comments, especially on the Congress's policy of appeasement and the communal approach they followed in the name of secularism. Today Uddhav Thackeray has formed an alliance with Congress and has sidelined Hindutva. So he will not be able to speak much on Hindutva in his rally because it will disturb his Muslim votes," he said, according to the ANI. "In the true sense, the thoughts of Balasaheb Thackeray will be expressed in Azad Maidan which will be addressed by Eknath Shinde. Along with that, there will be his sharp comments on the bad things that Congress has spread in the country," Nirupam added. Another Shiv Sena leader Manisha Kayande said, "Lakhs of people will come. The rally will be held at Azad Maidan. To hear the ideas of Balasaheb Thackeray, Shiv Sainiks used to come here from across the country...Shiv Sena had deviated from its path and Eknath Shinde is bringing it back to its path. All his supporters, Hindutva supporters will be there in large numbers," the ANI had earlier reported. (with PTI and ANI inputs)

RSS should introspect whether it agrees with today's 'hybrid' BJP: Uddhav

Addressing the Shiv Sena (UBT) Dussehra rally at Shivaji Park in Mumbai, Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday targeted the BJP and said that the RSS should introspect whether it agrees with today's 'hybrid' BJP. Uddhav said, "I parted ways with the BJP as I don't believe in its version of Hindutva. BJP is like Kauravas, smacks of arrogance," the PTI reported on Saturday. He further said that BJP should be ashamed of calling itself Bharatiya, it no longer belongs to people. Meanwhile, the Shiv Sena (UBT) on Saturday paid a tribute to the late industrialist Ratan Tata at the party's annual Dussehra rally. Ratan Tata, 86, passed away on October 9 at a city hospital. Uddhav Thackeray and other leaders stood in silence as a mark of respect to the veteran industrialist before Thackeray addressed the rally. Uddhav said that the Tata group gave India salt, but some industrialists are taking away Mumbai's saltpan lands. "Tata gave us salt which spices our food. But some industrialists are taking away Mumbai's saltpan lands," Uddhav Thackeray said in his speech, without naming anybody. "Ratan Tata once told me that JRD Tata trusted him after seeing his work, and then handed over his legacy. He said Balasaheb also chose you (Uddhav) after he found you trustworthy," Thackeray added, according to the PTI. Earlier, the Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut said, "It has been a tradition for more than 50 years - only 2 Dussehra rallies are famous - Shiv Sena's Dussehra rally which was started by Balasaheb Thackery and the other one is of RSS' Dussehra rally in Nagpur. Now, the duplicate Shiv Sena in Maharashtra, the Sena of Modi and Shah is also organising the Dussehra rally in the name of Shiv Sena, many other organisations also do rallies but the importance of the rally that is organised in Shivaji Park has always been more in the country and state," the ANI reported. "Today, our rally will be held. After Balasaheb Thackeray, Uddhav Thackeray is leading the party and he will address the rally. Bow and arrow has always been our symbol, but Modi-Shah through theft gave it to dishonest and duplicate people, but it doesn't change anything. Bow and arrow will always be in our hearts but our symbol is Mashal (flame) now. This Mashal induces fire but also gives light," Sanjay Raut added, as per the ANI. Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson Anand Dubey termed Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led faction as a "duplicate" and said that Uddhav Thackeray has worked for the honour of Maharashtra while others have backstabbed and have been the servitors of Delhi. Anand Dubey said, "Today, two (Dussehra) rallies are taking place in Mumbai - one, of the real Shiv Sena and the other, of the duplicate Shiv Sena. The real Shiv Sena is taking place at Shivtirth, like every year. Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray can't be compared to any other Shiv Sainik or any other duplicate Shiv Sainik. Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray has worked for the honour and character of Maharashtra. Others have backstabbed Maharashtra and have been the servitors of Delhi." "In a month or two, the duplicate Shiv Sena will not be seen anywhere. There will be just one Shiv Sena," Dubey added, the ANI reported. (with PTI and ANi inputs)

Thane MACT awards Rs 24.54 lakh compensation to kin of man killed in accident

The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) in Maharashtra's Thane district awarded a compensation of Rs 23.54 lakh to the family of a man who was killed in a motorcycle accident in 2013, reported news agency PTI. Thane MACT chairman and principal district judge S B Agrawal ordered the respondents, the owner of a tempo and United India Insurance, to pay the compensation along with 7.5 per cent interest per annum, reported PTI. The copy of the order dated October 4 was made available on Saturday. Advocate PV Rao appeared for the deceased man's family, while the owner of the vehicle did not appear, and the matter was decided ex-parte against him. Advocate Rao informed the Thane MACT that the deceased, Sabir Haroon Saldurkar (30), was working with Metito (Overseas) Qatar WLL, Doha, Qatar, and earned Rs. 50,000 per month, reported PTI. On November 28, 2013, Saldurkar was proceeding on his motorcycle from Dapoli towards Harne when a tempo driven in a rash and negligent manner knocked him down, and he died of the injuries, he said, reported PTI. The Thane MACT ordered a compensation of Rs 23.54 lakh to the family, including Rs 15,000 towards loss of estate, Rs 40,000 towards loss of filial consortium, and Rs 15,000 towards funeral expenses, reported PTI. It also ordered Rs 13 lakh to be kept in a fixed deposit in the name of the deceased's wife and Rs 10 lakh in his daughter's name. Tribunal awards Rs 23.5 lakh compensation to kin of man killed in motorbike accident The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) in Maharashtra's Thane district has awarded a compensation of Rs 23.54 lakh to the family of a 30-year-old man killed in a motorcycle accident in 2018, reported PTI. Both the owner and insurer of the motorcycle, which Yusuf Ibrahim Inamdar was riding pillion, are jointly and severally liable for the compensation, the MACT presided over by Chairman S B Agrawal said in the order passed on September 25, reported PTI. Inamdar was riding a pillion on November 11, 2018, when the motorbike collided with another vehicle (not specified in the order) while on Murbad-Kalyan road. The rider of the motorcycle, owned by Ganesh Krishnan Iyer, failed to apply brakes or control the vehicle, resulting in Inamdar sustaining severe injuries to which he later succumbed, the man's wife and mother told the tribunal, reported PTI. The motorcycle owner did not appear before the tribunal, hence the matter was decided ex-parte against him. The vehicle's insurer, however, opposed the claim on various grounds. The tribunal ruled in favour of the petitioners, stipulating that both the owner and insurer of the motorcycle are jointly and severally liable for the compensation of Rs 23.54 lakh, reported PTI. To ensure the financial security of the petitioners, the tribunal ordered that Rs 20 lakh be placed in a fixed deposit in the name of Inamdar's 31-year-old wife for five years, allowing her to access the quarterly interest, reported PTI. Similarly, Rs 3 lakh should be deposited in the name of the deceased's 58-year-old mother for the same duration. The remaining amount, along with the accrued interest, is to be paid directly to Inamdar's wife, the MACT said.  (With inputs from PTI)

Tension erupts during RSS procession in Ratnagiri; two cases registered

Tension erupted in Maharashtra's Ratnagiri city during a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) procession after members of a minority community allegedly shouted slogans, police said on Saturday, reported news agency PTI. The police have registered two cases following the incident in the Konkan Nagar area on Friday night, an official from Ratnagiri city police said. "We have registered two cases based on complaints. Five accused have been identified, and we have issued notices to them. No one has been arrested so far," he said, reported PTI. When the RSS took out an RSS procession (path sanchalan) in the area on the eve of the Dussehra festival, people from a minority community shouted slogans that allegedly hurt religious sentiments, the official said. He said there was no violence, but several people gathered at the police station late last night and demanded first information reports against persons involved in the incident, reported PTI. Cases have been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and a probe is underway, the official added.  India is portrayed as a threat in Bangladesh: Bhagwat RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Saturday said India has become stronger and more respected in the world with enhanced credibility in the last few years but sinister conspiracies are testing the country's resolve, reported PTI. Attempts to disturb and destabilise the country seem to be gaining momentum from all directions, while a narrative is being spread in Bangladesh to portray India as a threat, he said. Addressing the annual Vijayadasahmi rally of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in Nagpur, Bhagwat said firmness of personal and national character becomes the foundation of strength for the victory of auspiciousness and righteousness, whether the situation is favourable or not, reported PTI. "Everyone feels Bharat has become stronger and more respected in the world with enhanced credibility in the last few years. A country becomes great due to the national character of its people. This year is important as RSS steps into its centenary year," he said, reported PTI. Besides hopes and aspirations, challenges and problems also exist in India, he said. "We should draw inspiration from personalities like Ahilyabai Holkar, Dayananda Saraswati, Birsa Munda and many more who devoted their lives to the count's welfare, dharma, culture and society," said the RSS chief. I left BJP, but that does not mean that we have left Hindutva," he said, reported ANI. The 288 seats Maharashtra Assembly will go to polls later this year. The Election Commission of India has yet to announce the poll dates. The upcoming Maharashtra election will see a contest between the Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition, comprising the Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (Sharad Pawar faction), and Congress, and the Mahayuti Alliance, which includes the BJP, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), and NCP (Ajit Pawar faction). Mid-Day Premium What Mumbaikars think about renaming iconic places, buildings, railway stations

Mumbai, a bustling metropolis known for its rich history and cultural diversity, has witnessed the renaming of several iconic places, buildings, and railway stations in recent years. The renaming of places such as Victoria Terminus to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Elphinstone Road to Prabhadevi, and Marine Lines Station to Mumbadevi has sparked mixed reactions among Mumbaikars. Another iconic structure in Delhi, the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) has officially been renamed as the Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library (PMML) Society. While some see it as a step toward reclaiming the heritage and honouring local icons, others feel it disrupts the city’s identity or creates confusion. A matter of pride and heritage For many, changing the names of locations to represent local history and culture serves as a tribute to Marathi icons and traditions. Suresh Phalke, a Dadar resident, voiced his support: “It’s not just about changing names, it’s about reclaiming our heritage. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was a great warrior, and naming one of the busiest railway stations in his honor is a matter of pride for all of Maharashtra.” Supporters of renaming believe that this is part of the broader effort to decolonise spaces that still bear the remnants of British colonial rule. “Victoria Terminus reflected a colonial past, but renaming it to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus reflects the spirit of Maharashtra’s history,” said Radhika Mehshram, a college student. “It’s a statement of our identity.” Nostalgia and the city’s legacy However, not everyone feels the same way. There is a deep sense of nostalgia associated with the older names. Many Mumbaikars feel that the city’s charm and legacy lie in the historical significance of its original names. Rahul Jain, a businessman from South Mumbai, expressed his concern: “These names have been part of our lives for decades. We grew up knowing Victoria Terminus and Elphinstone Road. Changing them erases part of our history.” Some also feel that renaming iconic places can create confusion, particularly for people who have known these landmarks by their old names for many years. “It’s difficult for older generations to adapt,” said Shanta Iyer, a Matunga resident. Iyer said that she still prefers to call it VT, “even though it has officially been renamed CSMT. For us, the old names carry memories and significance.” Economic and practical considerations Beyond sentiment, the renaming of places comes with logistical challenges and economic implications. Businesses and local authorities need to update signages, official documents, and maps, which adds to costs. Vijay Patankar, a shop owner in Prabhadevi, shared his concerns: “The renaming of Elphinstone Road to Prabhadevi was a good move culturally, but it caused a lot of confusion for months. I had to update all my business records, and people were confused about the station’s new name.” A political move? For some Mumbaikars, the renaming of places is seen as a political move, with parties vying to cement their influence by associating their icons with prominent landmarks. Suman M, an IT professional from Girgaon, remarked: “There’s a political angle to all this. It’s about which party can claim credit for naming something after their hero. It’s less about the city and more about the politics behind it.” What do political leaders have to say: Maharashtra Congress chief spokesperson Atul Londhe slammed the Maharashtra and Central governments, saying that both governments only focus on emotional politics rather than economic development. “This government prioritises emotional politics over economic development. This approach does not lead to infrastructural growth or development, making the renaming of iconic places, buildings, and stations pointless. It will not yield political success. What people want is genuine development. The BJP lacks a clear vision on how to take a global city like Mumbai forward,” Londhe told Mid-Day. While speaking to Mid-Day, Shiv Sena Secretary and Spokesperson Kiran Pawaskar criticised the people for questioning the renaming of iconic places and stations. Pawaskar said that he fails to understand why the decision to rename iconic places and stations is a cause for concern. “Citizens should take pride in this decision instead of questioning it. Take, for example, the renaming of Elphinstone Road Station, which was originally named by the British, to Prabhadevi—now, people can better relate to the name. The country’s situation was difficult, but Prime Minister Narendra Modi has transformed India’s image globally. Names matter because they reflect our identity,” Pawaskar said. He further said that another example is the renaming of Sandhurst Road Station, previously named after a British official, Lord Sandhurst, to Dongri, which resonates more with the city’s heritage. “India has made significant progress in every field since the Britishers left. So, why should our stations or iconic places still bear their names? The next generation should understand why these names were changed, so they can feel more connected to the roots of our nation. Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray often spoke about this need for change,” he said. “I fail to understand why are people opposing this decision. Those who are opposing this decision should reflect on whether they truly care about their country and Mumbai. Those who do will agree that places should be named after those who built this nation and state. We cannot have every place named after Indira Gandhi or Rajiv Gandhi,” Pawaskar added. Balancing tradition and progress In a city as dynamic and evolving as Mumbai, balancing tradition with progress is a challenge. While many support the renaming of places as a way to reflect the state’s culture and legacy, others feel it’s unnecessary and creates confusion in the daily lives of citizens. Ultimately, what resonates most with Mumbaikars is the deep connection they have with their city’s history—whether that history is reflected in its old names or its new ones. Mumbai, after all, is a city of contrasts, where the old and the new coexist, and its people continue to adapt and evolve, just like the names of its iconic places.

Mid-Day Premium IAF’s historic landing at Navi Mumbai airport

Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIAL) witnessed a significant milestone on Friday as the Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully conducted the inaugural landing at the under-development airport, which is scheduled to be operational by March 2025. The much-anticipated event saw a C-295 aircraft land on runway 26 (the southbound runway), marking a new chapter for the airport's operational capabilities. Pic/Prasun Choudhari The landing, termed “historic” by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, was attended by prominent dignitaries, including Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, both Deputy Chief Ministers and the Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol. A host of MPs and MLAs were also present to witness the inaugural landing. Following the touchdown of the C-295, the crowd was treated to a spectacular single circuit and flyby of the IAF Sukhoi Su-30 fighter aircraft, whose thunderous roar echoed over the airport. Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, in his media address, stated, “The airport, upon completion, will cater to approximately 9 crore passengers a year. This airport will also boost the development of the MMR and Maharashtra as a whole.” Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said, “We are now ready for fight and flight(s). This will be one of the biggest airports in the country.”  Pic/Prasun Choudhari NMIAL is a significant boon for the Mumbai and metropolitan region. Both Mumbai and Navi Mumbai airports will also be connected by a Metro line, which will make the commute between both airports shorter. The Navi Mumbai airport is scheduled to be completed by March 2025, but if the work is finished earlier, the airport will open for commercial use before March as well.” Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis along with Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol and NCP leader Sunil Tatkare were also present. Pic/Kirti Surve Parade Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol stated that the Navi Mumbai Airport will be named after Loknete DB Patil. On October 7, MoS Murlidhar Mohol informed via X, “Today, I chaired a meeting alongside Union Minister for Civil Aviation Shri Rammohan Naidu ji regarding the Government of Maharashtra’s resolution to name it Loknete DB Patil Navi Mumbai International Airport.” Why IAF planes were used An AAI official said, “These aircraft (C-295) are generally adapted to land on uneven terrain, which is why they are generally used for test landings. As this was the first landing, it was riskier to land an airliner as the faults (if any) in the runway are not known till the time an aircraft runs on it. As such aircraft are adapted to land on uneven terrain, there is low to zero chance of a catastrophic fault but the fault with the runway will be detected.” Earlier in the day, Aaditya Thackeray had tweeted: “While landing today, they’ve used the C-295, which as per @Airbus itself can land on unpaved and short runways... This costs the Indian Air Force time and taxpayers’ money...” Pic/Prasun Choudhari ‘Name it after Ratan Tata’ A petition has been launched on the Change.org platform asking for the new Navi Mumbai airport to be named after the late Ratan Tata. Started on October 10, it is gathering signatures at a fast pace. Excerpts from the petition state: “Naming the new airport in Mumbai after Sir Ratan Tata would be a fitting tribute to a visionary leader whose contributions have shaped modern India and Mumbai in particular.” It cites his contributions to “philanthropy, social welfare, and national development,” making him an iconic figure not just in business, but in the broader fabric of Indian society. In an exclusive, Mid-Day observed the first-ever takeoff from NMIAL as the C-295 aircraft soared into the skies just hours after the event concluded.
