Officials attribute the numbers to the sheer size of the Andheri West-Vile Parle area, and air travellers and New Year parties in Bandra

The H West ward comprising Bandra, Khar and Santacruz has been hit the worst during the ongoing third Covid-19 wave. It added 12,851 cases in the past 26 days, which is 42 per cent of the total tally of 21 months from March 2020 to December 2021. Civic officials said the rise was because it comprises a large population of national and international passengers. The K West ward, including Andheri, saw maximum cases, but the growth was 32 per cent.

The daily Covid-19 cases started increasing from the third week of December and the BMC has the bifurcation of 1.62 lakh cases recorded till January 16. The K-West ward comprising Jogeshwari to Vile Parle added maximum cases, at 18,809. However, it has a population of 7.74 lakh, more than double of H-West ward's population of 3.18 lakh.
The K-West ward saw a 32.5 per cent rise in cases in comparison to the total tally from March 2020 to December 2021, which is lower than that of H-West ward. “Cases in K-West ward are on the higher side, as it is among the populous wards and most of its residents stay in high rises. Hence the number of cases cannot be compared with that of the other areas that have less than half its population,” said a health official from K-West ward.
Even D Ward consisting Malabar Hill and Tardeo have been registering more cases than other areas since the beginning of the third wave. A ward that has less than 2 lakh population reported 30 per cent growth in cases. M-West ward (Ghatkopar) and K-East (Jogeshwari to Vile Parle) have also witnessed more cases this time.
However, it is the city's posh areas known for celebs that have been hit the most. “The H-West ward has a large population of national and international passengers, and the cases started rising sharply in the initial days of the third wave. Even the New Year's celebrations added more cases. Now, the infections are declining,” said Dr Sanjay Funde, medical officer of H-West ward.
