Plans to install more CCTV cameras to keep an eye on truants under NMMC jurisdiction

The Navi Mumbai Police has sent a proposal to the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) to install an additional 450 CCTV cameras within the jurisdiction of the civic body as several major spots in the city do not have a surveillance system in place.

Spreading the gaze
The department had first sent a proposal to NMMC last February and a reminder in November on the same. "We have submitted a survey report identifying over 106 additional spots under NMMC's jurisdiction. Majority of these include internal roads and junctions that have fewer cameras than required. At present we have only received a verbal approval from the civic body. Further details are awaited," said a senior official from the department on condition of anonymity.

Final decision soon
When contacted, Dinesh Waghmare, NMMC Commissioner said: "We have received the proposal and we are examining the locations prescribed by the police officials. A final decision will be taken soon after project’s cost estimation is finalised."

First to issue e-challans
Navi Mumbai is the first city in the state to issue e-challans with the help of the 262 cameras installed across NMMC's jurisdiction from Airoli to CBD Belapur. Earlier in January, on-the-spot e-challans were also introduced here.

The device enables traffic officials to get complete information of the motorists after inserting their respective driving license. Further, based on the rules violated by the motorists, officials type the offence on the device and issue a receipt in the form of an e-challan.

Till now more than 500 motorists have been issued e-challans through CCTV cameras and over a thousand were issued on the spot e-challans this month.
