A woman and her four-month-old child were crushed to death and ten others injured when a tree fell on their huts in Bhiwandi town of Thane district, fire officials said

Thane: A woman and her four-month-old child were crushed to death and ten others injured when a tree fell on their huts in Bhiwandi town of Thane district, fire officials said.


The banyan tree, which was about a century old, fell on 3-4 huts in a slum colony at Khadiput locality of Bharat Nagar on Bhiwandi outskirts at around 9.30 PM yesterday, Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation's sub-station fire officer Rajesh Pawar said today.


In the mishap, Anisha Ashraf Ali (25) and her son Altaf Ali (4 months) were crushed to death, he said.


The other ten injured, including eight women, were rushed to IGM hospital.

One seriously injured person was later shifted to Mumbai's Sion hospital, he said.

Fire officials and local police rushed to the slum colony for rescue and relief operations.
