They don't make them like Mahendra Kalwar any more. The Central Railway employee returned Rs 1 lakh that he found in an autorickshaw to its rightful owner, Zohra Kazi (40).

"I had taken a rickshaw from Khar station to my Khar Danda house at 7 pm on Friday. While alighting I saw a plastic bag and took it with me.

But since I had a train to catch for Delhi that night, I forgot about the bag and got busy with packing.

Later, however, since my reservation didn't get confirmed, I returned home," said Kalwar.

'He's an angel'

He then checked the bag and found Rs 1 lakh and some documents in it. The bag also had the Pali Hill, Bandra, address of Zohra's neighbour Gulam Hussein.

"I knew how worried the bag's owner must be, but it was too late to go searching for him," added Kalwar.

The next morning, Kalwar and his nephew left for Bandra. "It took us two hours to find Hussein's house.

The owner was disturbed, as the money was for a house she bought in Mira Road," added Kalwar.u00a0

Hussein said, "Zohra was very tensed, as her mother is ill and her daughter has been hospitalised.

And she was worse after misplacing the bag. We were going to lodge a police complaint the next day, but Kalwar came home before that. He is a true angel."

Zohra said, "There are very few people like Kalwar who go out of their way to help others. Before handing over the bag, Kalwar even asked me about the contents in the bag and cross-checked them."

Honest Kalwar

Kalwar works in CR's Matunga workshop. As a token of appreciation, Kalwar's boss, Rajpal Singh, has written about his honest ways on the notice board.

"Kalwar is a man of principles. In the past, he's returned a gold ring and a costly watch," said Singh.
