The Government Railway Police inspector who arrested Akela on May 17 under the Official Secrets Act, after calling him to the police station under the pretext of questioning him under Section 447 of the Indian Penal Code that pertains to trespassing, is involved in a case of bribery.u00a0 Sunday MiD DAY possesses a recording of a phone call made in 2008, in which Pandarinath Yeram, deployed with the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus Government Railway Police, is demanding settlement money.
In 2008, Yeram investigated a case in which a ticket collector had been beaten at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus station. The main accused was an NGO worker, whose family approached Yeram to suppress the case in promise of payment of Rs 20,000. In the call made to the accused's family, Yeram states that he didn't call witnesses in the case. The family member recorded the call, which was provided to Sunday MiDDAY by a colleague of the accused.
Yeram goes on to complain that he was to have received Rs 10,000 to "settle the matter", which he hasn't. The family member says that Yeram has already been given Rs 10,000, and would be given another Rs 10,000 later. "You people give money to advocates, but when it comes to giving money to the police, you make excuses. If there had been someone else in my place, he would have demanded 50 (thousand). Ab toh sharafat ka zamana hi nahin hai," Yeram says in the call. When contacted, Yeram told Sunday MiD DAY, "This is not true. If you think it is, then complain against me."
