The Colaba police have identified the activist as Bharat Bhagoji Phatkare (46), a resident of Virar.
Phatkare was carrying some documents related to the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) that included files on scams in the corporation regarding water supply. A police officer from Colaba police station said, “He was angry since the Virar police was not registering a First Information Report (FIR) in the matter even after he told them he had several documents against the officers of VVMC.”
The activist claims that there was a multi-crore scam in the municipal corporation and nobody was ready to register an FIR in the matter. “He came to the DGP office, dispatched his letter and said he wanted to meet some senior officers. But, he was told to take an appointment, following which he allegedly drank phenyl on the office premises,” said the police officer.
Phatkare was rushed to St George Hospital for treatment. He has been booked for attempt to suicide by the Colaba police.
