The incident occurred between 2-3 pm on Monday, when the procession was passing by the upscale twin towers near a shopping centre on S V Road in Jogeshwari (West). Amidst the drums and the dance, eggs were allegedly hurled from the high-rise prompting the angry devotees to barge into the building.
A resident of the building, on condition of anonymity, told mid-day, “I was sitting in my balcony observing the procession when I saw four eggs thrown on the procession from a floor above mine. Fearing I would be blamed, I went inside.”
Crisis averted
As the furious devotees charged into the premises, some society members were allegedly waiting to fight it out. However, a few worried residents called the Amboli police. The secretary and other committee members, along with activists of local welfare associations, also came in to calm flaring tempers.
Confirming the incident, an Amboli police officer said, “The incident did take place. There are closed circuit cameras at the entrance of the building, but none in the passage or the terrace. The eggs were thrown from the two upper floors or the terrace. It was aimed at the Ganesh idol.”
The officer further added that several policemen were deployed after the incident, and that they are recording statements of the concerned persons. But, a case has not been registered; only a station diary entry has been made to avoid spreading the word, the officer explained. The building members and police eventually apologised to the devotees and assured that the culprits would be punished.
