An acid-laden container overturned on the busy Ghodbunder Road in Thane this morning, causing a traffic snarl. The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries in the incident.

As a precautionary measure, civic authorities immediately evacuated the nearby Thane municipal school, and called the fire brigade and a chemical engineer to dilute the spilt acid.

An over-speeding container, carrying 80 drums with a total of 21,600 litres of hydrochloric acid, toppled over at Gaimukh on Ghodbunder road, while on its way to Boisar.

As a result, acid started leaking from the container and the surrounding area was engulfed in acidic fumes. Authorities of the disaster management cell of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) stopped traffic for a while and evacuated a nearby municipal school. “Nobody was hurt in the incident, except the driver of the container, who sustained minor injuries,” said Santosh Kadam, chief of the disaster management cell.

The fire brigade reached the spot in a few minutes and diluted the spilt acid. The chief fire officer also visited the spot and supervised the dilution process. “We also called a chemical engineer to the spot and informed the company (BIC Chemicals and Packaging Pvt. Ltd) that owns the container about the incident,” Kadam said. “We will need two big cranes to move the container,” he added.

Meanwhile, another container overturned in the area at the same time, but nobody was hurt in the incident. Due to both the incidents, traffic from Borivli to Thane was disrupted for more than an hour.
