Swift action and teamwork by police patrol teams foiled an attempt to kidnap a constable by three inebriated persons whom he had penalised for drinking in public place and was taking the trio to the police station.

According to the police, constable Santosh Kadam, attached to the Bangur Nagar police station, penalised the trio Naresh Lalwani (40), reportedly the owner of Kareem's hotel, and his driver Azink Dodadhtli and an unidentified person for allegedly drinking in publicu00a0 near Chincholi Bunder in Malad on Wednesday.

Kadam sat in their car and directed them to take the vehicle to the police station.

But Kadam's colleague, S Chalke who was on duty with him and was following the car on his bike, smelt a rat when he saw the vehicle changing its route. Instead of taking the car towards the Bangur Nagar police station, the accused diverted it towards Andheri. Anxious, he immediately alerted other beat marshals and patrolling vans.

In the meanwhile, Chalke also continued chasing the car himself. Acting on the constable's SOS, two marshals reached Andheri with a combat van in tow. The hostage drama ended after a 30-minute chase when the car was finally intercepted near Mega Mall in Oshiwara.

While Lalwani and Dodadhtli were arrested, the third person, who accompanied them, managed to escape from the crime scene. Theu00a0 arrested duo was booked on the charges of kidnapping and preventing police officers from performing duty.

"The accused abused the constable and tried to kidnap him," said Additional Commissioner of Police Ramrao Pawar. The twou00a0 arrested accused were produced in the Borivli Metropolitan Court and were later released on bail.
