Thursday’s demolition drive in Upvan area of Thane has once again proved that municipal commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal is truly the no-nonsense ‘Demolition Man’. On the second day of the drive, a special squad of Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) razed the Satyam Lodge in the area, after it was found to illegally run 290 underground rooms. Apart from this, the civic body also demolished five dance bars, eight lodges and 25 dhabas in the area under tight security arrangements.
Illegal operations
The Satyam Lodge, which is located on the road that leads to Yeroor Hills, had three underground floors where the rooms were located.
“We were shocked to find the rooms that were being run secretly. From outside the lodge looks like a 10×20 structure. But on entering we found that there were three underground tunnels where 290 rooms were being run illegally. Infact, the owner was paying tax only for the 16 rooms on the topmost floor of the lodge,” said Sandeep Malvi, deputy municipal commissioner and public relation officer, TMC.
Few hours, high charges
According to sources, the lodge used to charge customers highly even if they wished to use the rooms for a couple of hours. Malvi further said, “Thousands of condoms were found dumped inside the lodge. Even, a few cartons of liquor were recovered.” He also said that the drive would be intensified in the coming days.
The entire operation, which went on for eight hours, was conducted in the presence of Jaiswal and Sunil Chavan, additional municipal commissioner, TMC.
Legal action
Speaking to mid-day, Jaiswal said, “In the last two days we demolished more than 30 dance bars. In the process we found that Satyam Lodge was being run illegally and hence action was taken. Legal action will also be taken.”
