Police said as they neared Shahpur, Gunhalkar saw a dog lying in a pool of blood, but he could not control the car, which skid on it and fell about 20 feet below the highway. Gunhalkar survived as he was wearing a seat belt. Sharma and Tiwari who were not wearing seat belts, were thrown out. A few locals rushed them to a nearby hospital. Sharma and Tiwari were declared dead before arrival, while Gunhalkar's condition is critical.

According to police sources, after the car skid, its central locking system got unlocked, and all the doors opened. The trio were close friends. Sharma worked with Indian Railways and was recently transferred to Ajmer. He and Tiwari, who was his brother-in-law, were residents of Vasai while Gunhalkar stayed at Nalasopara. Tiwari had got the contract for photography for the festival which is going to be organised next month in Nashik, and they were travelling in Gunhalkar's car.
