Thane: Family donates eyes of daughter who killed self

When you’re grieving over the loss of a loved one, it takes great fortitude to think of somebody else. That’s what a Thane family did over the weekend, when they decided to donate the eyes of their daughter, who allegedly killed herself after failing to secure admission to engineering colleges.

The tragic incident occurred in the wee hours of Friday, when Rajesh Bhosle, a constable in the Thane police force, woke up at 2.30 am to find that his daughter, 18-year-old Aditi, was missing from her room. The family immediately began searching for her and, to their shock, found the teenager lying in a pool of blood atop a car parked on the premises of Shrey Anand society, a housing society on Thane’s Kolshet Road.

Bhosle rushed his daughter to Jupiter Hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival. The Kapurbawdi police registered an accidental death report in the incident. According to the police, they found a suicide note in the girl’s bag. Police claimed Aditi, who had just cleared her Std XII exam, had been under a lot of stress because she had not been able to secure admission to an engineering college in and around Thane despite numerous attempts.

“We found a suicide note in her bag in which she has said she is committing suicide as she couldn’t get into engineering colleges. She jumped from the terrace of the nine-storey building,” said a police officer
Police then moved the body to Thane Civil Hospital for a post-mortem procedure.

While the family was following up with the authorities at the hospital, the representatives of an eye bank approached Rajesh, asking asking if he wished to donate the eyes of their daughter. The grieving father immediately consented and made the donation.

All this was done within six hours, the approximate time limit within which the eyes need to be collected from a body to be deemed healthy to transplant to someone who needs them. When mid-day attempted to speak to Rajesh, he confirmed that the family had indeed agreed to donate their daughter’s eyes, as they wished to see her live on.

“We don’t want to discuss the issue since the family is in a state of shock. But, we wanted her to live on in some form or the other. That’s why we donated her eyes,” Rajesh told mid-day.
