Two days back, the Territorial Range of Thane Forest Department was informed about this incident by the locals on their control room. They were told the monkey was causing trouble to local residents staying on the eastern periphery of the park between Bhandup and Mulund. The forest department (FD) immediately conveyed the same to Mumbai-based NGO RAWW (Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare), after which a team of volunteers including the founder of RAWW, Pawan Sharma, reached the area to safely rescue the monkey.
“There have been incidents in the past when monkeys died because of electrocution. This is what we thought when we saw the monkey (rhesus macaque) on February 16 as the burn injuries on its body were visible. We were able to rescue the monkey, and it was immediately taken to Thane SPCA for treatment. The doctors tried their level best to save the animal, but it succumbed to the injuries on Saturday morning,” informed Sharma from RAWW
The shocking incident might have taken place more than a week back as the doctors also found maggots on the injured part of the body.
NGO RAWW now plans to approach the local police station and the FD, requesting authorities to investigate the matter and take strict action against those involved in the inhuman act.
The Rhesus macaque (monkey) is protected under schedule-2 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
