Ibrahim Sayyed hanged himself at the boundary of the school; the body was not removed before students turned up in the morning, and many refused to attend school the next day
The boundary between Golibar Municipal School (GMS) and a cemetery has always posed a hurdle for the administration to convince their students to attend school. Their problems became worse when a man committed suicide by hanging from the school’s window shed, on January 27.

The school holds classes for Std I to IV on the ground floor, and Maulana Azad Private Trust holds Urdu-medium classes for Std V to X on the first floor. On Monday, the session started like every day at 7 am. However, it turned into a horrifying day for both the school administrators and the students.

One could see the dead body of Golibar resident Ibrahim Sayyed (43), who had committed suicide by hanging himself with a nylon rope, on the boundary wall of the school and the adjoining cemetery. The body had not been removed by the time the students reached the school for their morning classes.
Tahera Shaikh, the principal of Maulana Azad School, said, “We could see the dead body hanging outside the window of the ground floor. One of our staff members, who stays close to the deceased, told us that Sayyed, who was regular with his namaz, must have hanged himself after offering prayers around 6.30 am.
Since our school is on the first floor, our students could not view it directly, but the teachers on the ground floor had to keep their windows closed till the police took the body away.” However, the body was cleared later. “I work in the afternoon shift and did not see the body ,” said a teacher from the BMC school.
“But, I heard from the teachers of the morning shift about the incident. Although the height of the window is such that you can’t get a clear view of the deceased, they had to keep the windows closed.” But students still managed to get a glimpse of the gory scene. Salim Khan (name changed), a student of Std IV said, “An uncle hanged himself outside our school, facing the cemetery.
Many students saw it before our teachers closed the windows. Some students have not turned up today out of fear.” Zainab Talat (name changed), a Std III student said, “We know that an uncle died behind our school, but we couldn’t see him.” The case is registered at Nirmal Nagar police station. Sayyed, a rickshaw driver, allegedly committed suicide as he was in debt.
