Airport authorities hope to catch criminals now

After last week's gold heist at the airport, speed breakers have been put up at important spots to make vehicles move slowly giving security men additional time to react.u00a0

The Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) will install scanners at all entry and exit points, while the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has deployed additional guards and is manning buildings housing the Airport Authority of India (AAI) offices and Air India domestic cargo complex. Till now, the airport terminal building and operational area gate were the only areas manned by the CISF.u00a0

"The speed breakers will help our security men get to moving vehicles in time," senior commandant, CISF, Sanjay Prakash said. The operational area is at any point of time frequented by over 20,000 to 30,000 people working with various agencies within the airport. Speaking of the scanners, Prakash said, "This will prevent mere superficial checks on those entering the operational area."

Mumbai airport has eight entry and exit points of which five are functional. The number of people from various agencies holding entry permits to the operational as well as cargo area has been posing a unique problem for airport authorities.u00a0

To make matters worse, there are multiple organisations functioning at the airport and having uniform background checks for everybody is not an easy task.

"It is an issue since there is a sizeable number of people whose background checks are not done because of reasons beyond our control. The contractual labourers working on various projects inside the airport are prominent among them," said Prakash.
