A 59-year-old man was killed after a ground plus three-storey building collapsed in the early hours of Friday morning in Bhiwandi. The building had been evacuated over eight months ago and it had also been declared dilapidated by the Thane municipal Corporation (TMC). The collapse took place at 12.55 am when Mohammad Kalim Momin, a driver by profession, was asleep on the ground floor of the unoccupied area.
"We received a call around 1.15 am that a ground plus three structure had collapsed in Bhiwandi and we immediately rushed to the site. During the search operation, we recovered Mohammad Kalim Momin’s body and we kept searching for more casualties till 4 am. The deceased was identified with the help of his driving licence, which also mentions that he was a resident of Shanti Nagar in the Pirani Pada area of Bhiwandi," said DN Salvi, fire brigade officer. Officials of Nizampura police station have sent Momin's body for post mortem at a nearby hospital. "Initial investigations revealed that the deceased was a driver and he had taken shelter in the building premises just to sleep," said a police official.

Apparently, the building was over 40 years old and TMC had declared it unfit for occupation recently, following which the residents were evacuated from the premises. Meanwhile, Santosh Kadam, regional disaster management cell officer, said, "The building was located at the Niranjan Compound at Khadak Road. Except that one casualty, no other person was injured. We are clearing the debris now."
