Was it a robbery or just murders? The Ulhasnagar police don’t know. Three members of a local family were brutally hacked to death with axes at their home early yesterday by an unknown person. The Hill Line police station and Ulhasnagar Crime Branch earlier suspected the case was a robbery. But none of the valuables were stolen.

The deceased are Shankar Bhandari (60), his wife Fasubai (48) and son Sunny (22). They were residents of Karavale village. Shankar has four sons; two are married and live in the same village. The third son Anil and his wife would live with them, but at the time of the murder, they were at his in-law’s house. “As it was heavily raining, he stayed at his father-in-law’s place. They decided to return in the morning,” said a police officer. On the other hand, Sunny would spend most of his time studying at his uncle’s house but had just returned home the night before the murder.
Shankar owns 10 buffaloes and earned a livelihood by selling their milk. At 4 am yesterday, one of their workers went inside the house after completing his work. “Sunny would usually join the worker but when he didn’t turn up, the worker went inside, only to see the family in a pool of blood. The accused had entered from the back window and assaulted the couple and Sunny, who was in the bedroom,” said a police officer from Ulhasnagar Crime Branch. A case has been registered at Hill Line police station.
The cops saw everything was messy and the cupboard was open, and suspected it to be a robbery. But nothing was found missing. Sunil Bharadwaj, DCP, Ulhasnagar, said, “We found three axes from the spot, with which the deceased were brutally attacked on their head and neck. We suspect it was a robbery, but there is no clue yet.” The cops also also visited the Grampanchayat and Tehsildar’s office to check for any property or family dispute.
