The case came to light after Jaideep Patel, a businessman from Gujarat, managed to escape the jaws of death and escaped to the city to lodge a complaint with the Dindoshi police.
The abduction
Patel told the Dindoshi police that on October 26, he along with Bhartiben Jaiswal had come to the city. According to his statements, he came with Jaiswal, a famous sex racketeer in Gujarat, who had promised him a very high-profile prostitute.
“Jaiswal received a call from a Saleem Khan that he had some high-profile prostitutes that attracted rich, successful customers. Based on that information, Jaiswal and I immediately left for the city and as soon as we reached the city, we booked a room in Borivli (East). We also informed Saleem that we were in the city and wanted to meet him,” said Patel in his statement.
The next day, Saleem arranged a meeting and said the girls would be available at Santosh Nagar in Gokuldham, Goregaon (East).
However, when Patel and Jaiswal reached the address given to them, Saleem along with two others identified later as Raju Nepali and Raju asked Jaiswal to join them in another room. The men then tied her up and murdered her. They then returned to the room Patel was in, blindfolded him and started beating him up. The trio decided that Patel was a rich man and thought they would seek a ransom amount for him and put him in his car and fled the city. They also dumped Jaiswal’s body in the trunk of Patel’s car.
The great escape
“I didn’t know where Jaiswal was. I know that we crossed Jhansi in Andhra Pradesh as the kidnappers had stopped at a dhaba there to eat food,” said Patel in his statements. When the three went to wash their hands, Patel realised this was his moment and immediately started the car and fled to Gujarat after which he came to Mumbai to register a complaint completely unaware of Bhartiben’s murder.
Meanwhile, officials from Kasturba Marg had discovered an unidentified body of a woman and after receiving news of Patel fleeing, they asked Patel and relatives of Bhartiben to identify the body.
“If Patel had not escaped, he would have been murdered on the way and the crime would have never come to light. Thanks to Patel’s bravery, he survived and also helped us solve a crime,” said an official from Dindoshi police station.
A police officer from Kasturba Marg told MiD DAY that they have already dispatched a team towards the Nepal border, as they suspect that the killers would head there after their crime.
“Investigations are still going on and we are trying to nab the accused after which we will be able to solve this case,” said Inspector Sudhir Sankhe of Kasturba Marg police station. u00a0
