Dr Gaurav Adankar sustained injuries to his neck and forehead after a drunk patient attacked him with a blade; resident doctors demand better security measures
Resident doctors at Rajawadi Hospital struck work yesterday and refused to treat patients at the civic-run hospital in Ghatkopar. They were protesting the attack on a doctor on Monday night by a patient. According to doctors, Dr Gaurav Adankar was struck by a patient identified as Saif Sheikh on Monday night. Doctors said that Sheikh, who was intoxicated, felt ignored by Dr Adankar and wanted to be treated immediately.

Following the attack on Dr Gaurav Adankar, doctors said that they wanted a police station inside the hospital and demanded more security personnel at night
“Sheikh felt he was ignored. But, Adankar was busy attending to another patient, owing to which there was a delay. Furious that he was neglected, Sheikh attacked him,” said Dr Varun Doshi, a colleague of Dr Adankar at the hospital. According to an eyewitness, Sheikh used a blade to attack the doctor. Dr Adankar is now admitted to the hospital with injuries to his neck and forehead.
Dr Doshi added that at the time of the attack no one came forward to help. Later that night, Sheikh was arrested by the Tilak Nagar police station. Following the incident, resident doctors went on a strike in protest of the attack. A resident doctor said, “We want one police station inside the hospital, and security should be increased at night to prevent such incidents in the future.”
They added that they would resume work only after they received a copy of the FIR. Meanwhile, police officers at Tilak Nagar said they had booked Sheikh under sections 332 and 353 of the Indian Penal Code. He will be produced in Kurla court today.
