Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, and in the case of a 25-yr-old woman from Kandivli, in Mumbai, she is leaving no stone unturned — even roping in the Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj — to ensure that her ex-fiancé faces the music.
Relationship falls apart
According to the survivor, since October 2015, she was in a yearlong relationship with a man named Zabiullah Khan, a clerk at the Indian Embassy in Riyadh, who she met online on Facebook. After exchanging chats and phone conversations for over 10 months, in April 2016, Khan, a native of Balrampur in Uttar Pradesh, came down to Mumbai for five days and proposed to the girl.
“During the five days that he stayed with me, he sexually abused me and later told me that he would marry me soon after he returned to Saudi Arabia. He assured me that he would ask for a marriage leave application and call me there soon,” she stated, adding, “He then went back and till June, kept delaying the plans. Meanwhile, he also asked me to help him buy furniture and household items for our new home. I invested over R10lakh in buying the things, however, in mid-June he turned his back on me. At the time, I was five weeks pregnant and had to abort. I have even saved a DNA sample in case he denies.”
The survivor then lodged an FIR against Khan at the Kandivli police station, but three months passed and yet no action was taken against Khan.
“The Kandivli police told me that they have dispatched a letter to the ministry of external affairs and a reply from there is awaited. So now, on my own, I have written to Sushma Swaraj to personally look into the matter and take necessary action against him.
‘Cheated other women’
“He has not only done this to me, but to at least three other women as well — one from Indonesia, one from Delhi and one from his native place. I was told about this by a friend of Khan’s,” said the complainant.
She added, “On August 10 and August 19, Khan also called me up and threatened that he would attack me with acid if I did not withdraw the FIR against him.”
Cop speak
Senior police inspector, Mukund Pawar said, “An FIR under sections 379 (Punishment for theft), 420 (Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 312 (Causing miscarriage) of the IPC and section 61 (A) of the IT Act has been registered against the accused in the matter. Since the case is against an accused abroad, we have to go through a procedure and action will be taken soon.”
