Sensing the growing angst and outrage among Mumbaikars owing to the potholes-ridden streets, the city's Congress unit is urging Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan to convene a special meeting, to think of ways to tackle the menace.

According to figures circulated by the authorities, there are 4,500
potholes in the city suburbs at present, and 1,500 potholes in the island city

The Mumbai Congress has reportedly put forward the logic that Chavan, being the head of the Urban Development department that controls civic bodies across the state, should exercise his legitimate authority and hold the meeting.

A senior Congress MLA told MiD DAY that the party members have been urging Chavan to convene the proposed meeting at the BMC headquarters, claiming that it will send the right message to citizens.

Mumbai Congress chief and Kalina MLA Kripashankar Singh also divulged that a written proposal, signed by all the Congress MLAs, was likely to be forwarded to Chavan today.

With the move, the Congress is clearly trying to cash in on the public's anger to garner some political advantage, drawing attention to the apathy of the Shiv Sena-BJP ruling alliance.

Meanwhile, top-notch BMC officials convened a meeting with the Suburban district guardian Minister Naseem Khan yesterday, to mull over problems posed by shoddy work done by local contractors on roads.

At the meeting, Khan gave two days to the BMC, MMRDA and PWD officials to fill up the city's potholes.

He also organised vigilance committees to monitor the work, giving them the licence to punish contractors who perform shoddy patchwork.

According to figures circulated by the authorities, there are 4,500 potholes in the city suburbs at present, and 1,500 potholes in the island city.

"I have directed the concerned officials to penalise contractors whose roads have developed potholes within two years of completion of work," said Khan at Vidhan Bhavan.

The issue is likely to feature on the agenda during the meeting between Chavan and Congress party MLAs and MPs scheduled for Saturday, where all attending will be invited to air their views on the Development Control Rules, as well as other problems plaguing Mumbai.
