The city police never thought they’d land a big fish when they were arresting a man for possessing an illegal weapon. The V P Road police nabbed a man from PB Road in Girgaum, on charges of possessing a country-made revolver yesterday.

Cops received a tip-off about Kalmi Bhavichan Yadav (24), a resident of Chunabhatti. On his arrest, they seized a .12 bore revolver and three live cartridges. He was booked under the Arms Act. But, during interrogations he revealed that he had committed around 20 murders in his native state Bihar.

“The accused told us he was from Katihar district in Bihar. His wife and one-year-old son stay with his mother-in-law in Bihar,” informed Rajendra Chavan, senior police inspector of V P Road police station. According to his confession to the police, his father was killed by four people in 2003. His brother Paglu then avenged his death by murdering one, but the other three killed him.

Yadav said he then formed a gang and killed the remaining three murderers of his father and brother in 2010 and 2011. He also killed several others as the gang leader and then fled to Mumbai around two years ago. He told officers he had been staying in Chunabhatti for the past few days.

“He used to work as a painter with contractors of MHADA and stay in the same houses. After finishing work, he would shift to a new home,” said Sub-Inspector Raju Surve, who arrested Yadav. Cops have contacted the Bihar police to corroborate his confession. “We are verifying his claims and are in touch with the Bihar police. Only they can throw light on these cases,” said Surve.
