A tempo driver was allegedly abducted by nine persons for a ransom of Rs 10 lakh but was later rescued by police.

The incident took place on Thursday when the miscreants, who posed as policemen and scribes intercepted a pan-masala laden tempo which was proceeding to Vasai near Chillar Phata on Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway and held driver Maqsud Khan captive, Police Sub Inspector (PSI) R A Bhore of Manor police station said.
The abductors, all aged between 30-40 demanded a ransom of Rs 10 lakh from the owner of the tempo for releasing the driver and threatened him of dire consequences on failing to pay up, he said.
The driver was rescued on Thursday evening after the owner approached the police. Also the nine accused, all residents of Tarapur and Boisar were arrested, the PSI said.
A case under sections 341, 385, 170, 323, 506 of IPC has been registered.
