A notorious criminal Joy Murugan (35), wanted in nearly 17 cases of robbery and dacoity, was killed in an encounter by a team of Crime Branch unit VII at Vikhroli-Jogeshwari Highway last night.
DCP Rajkumar Vatkar told MiD DAY, "We received a tip-off that Murugan was going to meet an accomplice near the Kanjurmarg Highway, and a trap was laid by the crime branch."
However, when the cops asked Murugan to surrender, he opened fire at the police team with a country made revolver. In retaliatory fire, Murugan was shot dead, but his accomplice managed to escape.
Murugan has cases registered against him in Shivaji Nagar, Nalasopara, Dahisar, Gamdevi, RAK Marg, Antop Hill, Tilak Nagar and Chembur police stations, said an officer from unit seven of the crime branch.
However, he never appeared for the hearings in court, and was declared absconding in several cases. Other than robbery, he also had cases of attempt to murder against him.
