A disaster management unit in Mahim Bay to guard the coast and Bandra-Worli Sea Link gets no clearance from environment ministry; is finally built on land in Bandra

It's a known fact that the terrorists who created mayhem in Mumbai in November last year entered the city from the sea that had no security cover.

Following the terror attacks, there were promises from several government agencies about beefing up security along the coast.

Among them was the MSRDC's plan to construct a Disaster Management Unit (DMU) in the middle of the sea at Mahim Bay.

Tired of the delay, the MSRDC finally constructed a DMU on the road near the Bandra end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link in June, but they still insist on having the tower in the sea.

"A DMU in the Mahim bay will facilitate early indication of changes in marine parameters and help us keep
a close eye on the BWSL.

Since we did not get a response from the MoEF, we had to start the unit at Bandra as security of the BWSL is a top priority for us," said a senior MSRDC official.

"We had sent an application seeking permission to construct a DMU months before the BWSL was opened to the public.

If the ministry permits, we would still like to proceed with our plan," said R K Das, vice president (environment), MSRDC.

What proposal?

The MoEF, however, is unaware about any such proposal. "I've no idea about the appeal made by the MSRDC," said Nalini Bhat, adviser, MoEF to whom the MSRDC's letter was addressed.
