Silence isn't always golden. After the MSRDC received around 50 complaints of call drops every single day, it decided to install Flexi-Base Transreceiver System (F-BTS) on the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL) that will provide uninterrupted network coverage.

An MSRDC official said, "There is no network coverage in the centre of the BWSL and the F-BTS will provide uninterrupted service throughout the drive."

The F-BTS, which will be installed by next month, is a box-like piece of equipment that provides wireless communication between a user and a network, and is placed atop streetlights.

Test drive

"We conducted a survey on the 4.7-km Sea Link stretch after receiving a number of complaints.

We will soon place the F-BTS and test the network," said Shiv Shankar Lature, MD of Suyog Telematics, the company that will install the equipment.

The BWSL will have around 60 F-BTS connections, which will be allotted to network companies according to their signal transmissions.

Lature claimed that the F-BTS would also solve the problem of network congestion.

Similar systems have been installed on the Airoli Bridge, Nerul flyover, Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road, Sion-Panvel Road and Ghatkopar, Vashi and Thane flyovers.

"The system does not require any cumbersome power supply equipment unlike traditional tower units," added Lature.

Commuters say
This should have been installed when the Sea Link was opened to public, as it is a symbol of pride for Mumbaikars.

The MSRDC should put network jammers on the Sea Link, as it'll avoid accidents.
