A penchant for jewellery led to the murder of a 45-year-old housewife at Malvani, near Malad, on Saturday evening.

Investigations have revealed a startling chain of events, leading to the arrest of Afsana Khan, and her son Javed Khan on Sunday evening. A search has been launched for the third suspect, identified as Pappu Khan.

Victim Gulabi had reportedly approached her neighbour, Afsana, for a loan of Rs 50,000, with which she intended to buy jewellery for her personal use.

Afsana, however, was allegedly envious of Gulabi's collection, which she flaunted at all times to her neighbours. "At any given moment she could be seen adorned in jewellery worth Rs 1.5 lakh," said police inspector Jagdish Surve.

An evaluation of the events that transpired points the needle of blame firmly in Afsana's direction. Afsana allegedly hatched a plot with her son Javed to kill Gulabi and steal all her jewellery.

Gulabi's daughter, a high-profile bargirl, had reportedly spurned Javed's overtures and married another man. Javed contrived a plot to kill Gulabi, in an attempt to avenge the insult. Pappu Khan, a relative from Uttar Pradesh, was also allegedly roped in as an accomplice.

Death drive

On Friday evening, the trio asked Gulabi to accompany them in a rickshaw to Malvani church, under the pretext of loaning money to her at the spot. Soon, however, the auto-rickshaw veered into a deserted lane, where the three subdued Gulabi and strangulated her in the rear seat of the vehicle.

Afsana and Pappu then positioned the corpse, in a seated posture, between them. The vehicle headed towards an isolated spot on Marve beach, where the three accused allegedly dumped the corpse, under the cover of darkness. When his mother failed to return home late at night, Gulabi's son lodged a missing person's complaint with the police.

Investigators nabbed two of the three suspects after neighbours informed them that they had witnessedu00a0u00a0 Afsana and Gulabi leaving in Javed's's auto-rickshaw on Friday evening. The police put the missing pieces together and made the arrests based on their conclusions.
