If you are planning to shift to Thane or Navi Mumbai, the news has just got better. Along with falling property prices, both areas became near-zero load shedding zones. Ashok Pendse, an energy expert from Mumbai Grahak Panchayat, said the economic downturn and subsequent shutdown of industries had lowered the demand for power. "Power that we got for Rs 9 per unit is now available for Rs 5 per unit," explained Pendse.

A Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd official said that the demand and supply of power on January 21 stood at 4.27 million units. "It can be said that there is zero load-shedding. Soon, Thane and Navi Mumbai will also get an additional 100 MW from Tata Power Company's new Unit-8 in Trombay, which is expected to further ease the situation," said the official.

Archana Rohatgi from Kharghar says, a year back, her area had no power from 7.30 am to 10.30 am and 5.30 pm to 8.30 pm daily. "Thankfully, I don't have get up early now for heating water. Life is so much more comfortable," said Rohatgi.

Domestic consumers, in the 300-500 power unit bracket can expect an addition of Rs 0.43 paise per unit to their bills for three hours of additional power supply. The remaining shortfall is being tackled by two power cuts of 15 minutes each.
