Navi Mumbai to focus on green development

Preserving the city’s ecological balance now seems to be a top priority for the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), which yesterday inaugurated its ‘eco city cell’ that will undertake phase-wise environment-friendly development in the satellite city. The main aim of the new unit will be to promote green practices in both new and existing projects.

Mohan Dagaonkar, chief city engineer at NMMC, said, “We had signed a tie up with TERI (The Energy and Resource Institute) three years ago. With this collaboration, the civic body plans to take initiative in encouraging green technology in day-to-day activities. The programme will also concentrate on the preservation of Navi Mumbai’s bio-diversity.”

New constructions will be encouraged to implement green building practices, while existing residential complexes can use methods like rain water harvesting, solar water heating, waste management and usage of LED bulbs. In an effort to boost reuse and recycling, the corporation will also introduce garage sales in residential areas, where citizens will be able to buy and sell second hand products such as household items, electronics, etc.

Namrata Mahal, programme associate at TERI, said, “When it comes to upcoming residential projects, builders will be advised to construct using eco-friendly methods. Fly ash could be mixed with cement for construction. We are also planning to organise seminars and invite local residents for discussions and suggestions on eco-friendly concepts.”

According to Subhod Mule, deputy city engineer, a major aspect of the cell’s work will also be to protect Navi Mumbai’s open spaces and biodiversity in gardens and wetlands. The civic body will soon announce a helpline number for the cell as well, so residents can call for advice on eco-friendly concepts that can be implemented in their respective localities.
