Navi Mumbai: New station to come up between Thane and Airoli

Mumbai is all set to get one more suburban railway station, this time on the trans-harbour Thane-Vashi line. Dighe between Airoli and Thane will be the 77th on CR's suburban network and 114th on Mumbai's. Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation has invited bids for the Rs 107.2-crore station building and related infrastructure.

Just a year more
It will be a swanky, pre-engineered building with steel roof, a subway and a circulating area. The cost will also include preparatory works for a new rail link between Airoli and Kalwa. The targeted date of opening the new station is 2019. The last station opened in Mumbai on December 22, 2016 - Ram Mandir station - between Jogeshwari and Goregaon stations.

The proposed Dighe station is part of two new stations planned on the Thane-Vashi line, the other one being Bankode between Koparkha-irane and Turbhe, which the CR will build at a later date.

Railway officials said the distance between Thane and Airoli is about 5.76 km and the new station with four platforms and a subway will be near the Airoli Knowledge Park. It will prove to be a boon to thousands of residents from Digha village and those around the Thane-Belapur Road.

Connecting link
The station will be strategically located and will be linked to the proposed Airoli-Kalwa rail link, when it comes up in the future, tenders for which will also be floated soon. The rail link will help to decongest Thane station and provide a direct link between the trans-harbour Thane-Vashi line and the CST-Kalyan main line.

"We have been waiting for developments for quite sometime, and it is indeed good news that the railways have finally begun the process. The new station will be a boon as the crowd at existing stations along the line has been going up. The railways should also increase services along the stretch now," said Jayeshraj Mukadam, a local resident.
