Navi Mumbai: Man shoots friend in the hip during birthday party

A group of friends, out to celebrate a birthday, are now embroiled in an attempt to murder case after one of them misfired a bullet from his licensed pistol into the hip of another

A gang of five men from Pune set out from their homes to celebrate a friend’s birthday party in Kamothe, Navi Mumbai but the pomp soon turned grim after one of them was co-incidentally shot at during celebratory firing.


It was Mahesh Bhagat’s birthday on Wednesday. He and his friends Zagade, Nimbalkar and Karande were enjoying drinks at Farm Night bar near Panvel. After cutting the cake, they decided to head to Venkat Presidency, a restaurant in Kamothe

According to the police, the victim is Sachin Zagade, a farmer who was injured in the incident. While Santosh Nimbalkar, who owns a dairy farm business in Pune is the accused. Nimbalkar, Zagade and three others — Sachin Karande, Mahesh Bhagat and an unnamed friend came to Panvel on Wednesday evening in three different cars for Bhagat’s birthday. Nimbalkar has been arrested by the Kamothe police, while Zagade is recovering in the hospital.


The friends left in three cars. Karande, Nimbalkar and Zagade did not know the way, so they were following others. Karande was driving. Nimbalkar decided to whip out his licensed pistol and fire few rounds. He popped out on the sun roof, and fired two rounds

The incident took place around 10.30 pm on Wednesday and the police came to know about the incident at around 4 am yesterday.

He tried to go for a third one, but the pistol got blocked and he sat inside. But a third round got fired accidentally and hit Zagade through the seat, near his right kidney. The incident took place on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway but no one came to know about it before Zagade complained about the pain

Vikram Salunkhe, police sub-inspector, Kamothe police station said, “The victim underwent anaesthesia, so we are yet to take his statement. But we took the statement of Sachin Karande and have registered a case and arrested the accused Santosh. Santosh has a licensed revolver and claims he took it since his village is prone to dacoities. We have seized the SUV car.”

Nimbalkar and Karande then took him to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Kamothe and he was then shifted to Fortis Hospital. They were not aware about the jurisdiction so the police came to know about it later. Zagade is undergoing treatment at Fortis Hospital in Vashi. Illustrations/Uday Mohite

An official said, “All of them were mostly in the influence of alcohol. We are yet to get the reports. The accused claims that he had Breezer, but the medical exam is under process.” The Kamothe police station has registered a case under section 307 (Attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and different sections of the Arms Act.
