Residents of Nana Chowk in Grant Road, who have a harrowing time every single monsoon, may find relief next year with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) laying two storm water drains in the area. Nana Chowk gets waterlogged with even regular amounts of rain and residents have to wade through almost knee-high water every year.
Last month, the civic body laid two new storm water drain lines across Tardeo Road near the D ward office gate and other 1,800 mm-diameter line at Sane Guruji Marg. According to officials, while the ‘D’ ward office pipeline will help drain rain water coming from Tardeo Road and August Kranti Road areas, the other pipeline will provide relief to areas along Sane Guruji Road and increase the water carrying capacity of the existing SWD line passing through Nana Chowk and Tardeo Road.
The BMCâu00c2u0080u00c2u0088spent R30 lakh on the project. Nana Chowk, which is an important connector — Grant Road Station Road, August Kranti Road, Tardeo Road and Kennedy Bridge — gets waterlogged every year.
A senior civic official said, “Nana Chowk falls in the ‘chronic flooding’ category. In the monsoon, rainwater comes gushing from the hilly areas of Pedder Road, Altamount Road and August Kranti Marg to this saucer-like location of Nana Chowk, causing severe flooding. Along with reducing the time for rainwater run-off to recede, the new pipelines will help reduce water-logging to a great extent.”
The official said, “We have also set up a mechanism to synchronise the operations of Haji Ali and Love Grove pumping stations and floodgates to avoid waterlogging at Nana Chowk.” The main SWD line is linked to Haji Ali and Love Grove stations at Worli.
Devidas Kshirsagar, assistant civic commissioner of the ward, was unavailable for comment.
