Mumbai: Police officers submit fake medical bills, suspended

Six police personnel, including two women attached to the Local Arms Department of Mumbai police, have been suspended in past two months for submitting fake medical bills seeking mediclaim over Rs 1 lakh.

They have been identified as Assistant Police Inspector Kalpana Babaji, Police Sub-Inspector Abbas Abubakar Sheikh, and Constables Gulamhusain Sheikh, Vidya Rajput and Nanda Kunjarange. All the above constables except for Kunjarange were posted at Naigaon headquarters, she served at the Matunga unit. The sixth personnel, Madhuri Parab, gave fake bills for over Rs 2 lakh.

An official from LA-1 told mid-day, “While disbursing their medical bills, officials found some discrepancies, following which the papers were sent for detailed scrutiny. During examination it was found that most of the bills were fake. They forged the signatures of medical officers and even made fake rubber stamps to make them look real. Each of them has generated bills above '1 lakh.”

According to senior officials from the Local Arms Department, the staff take leaves under false pretexts, and then they want mediclaim with the help of fake papers. “A constable from LA-3, Madhuri Parab, got suspended in the month of October. After she submitted medical bills we checked them and found they were fake and hence after preliminary enquiry we suspended her,” said DCP Sanjay Patil of LA-3. He further added, “Fake bills worth around '2 lakh were submitted by her. We found in our investigation that she submitted bills in the name of a medical store that does not exist.”
