A 19-year-old suspected Bangladeshi illegal immigrant baffled Mumbai cops for being able to provide an ID proof while in police custody. According to a report by Hindustan Times, the girl, Sharmin Shaikh, was employed as a bar dancer and was residing in Janta Nagar area of Mira Road for around a year.
Investigations revealed that she was able to obtain the permanent account number (PAN) card thanks to a fake birth certificate allegedly issued by the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC).
After Shaikh's fraud was exposed cops are further investigating a possible racket behind this situation.
According to police records, over 1,000 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants were arrested in Mumbai in 2016 in 200 separate cases, out of which 150 were successfully deported.
