No more VIP treatment for anyone at civic hospitals

Preferential treatment is no longer on the prescription at civic hospitals. Three months ago, mid-day reported how the BMC had issued a circular to its hospitals, asking them to give such treatment to politicians, statesmen and those who accompany them. A circular issued on July 21 has turned the previous one on its head, asking doctors to ignore the older one and treat all patients with equal importance.

VIP in April
mid-day was the first to expose BMC's VIP circular on May 9. The April 29 circular, signed by Dr Avinash Supe, dean of KEM Hospital and director of medical education and major hospitals, stated: "Doctors are instructed to talk properly with patients accompanied by MLAs, corporators and public representatives. They should be treated on a priority basis..."

EPI in July
The new one issued on July 21 has done a 360-degree turn. It reads, "Consider the circular sent on April 29 as null. Hereby, we issue that all patients are equally important and ...given required treatment." Signed by Dr Supe, it reached BMC hospitals last week. He said, "The second one was issued over a month ago. It might have reached hospitals now."
