New year parties have always been a favourite time for drug dealers, but this year it seems they would not be able to make much of the business. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has spoiled their fun.
In a major crackdown, NCB officials seized 12 kg of Hashish worth nearly Rs 42 lakh on Wednesday. Three natives of Uttar Pradesh were arrested with the contraband from the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus. A Mumbai-based drug dealer is still on the agency’s radar for his involvement in the case.

The arrested accused have been identified as Shivprasad Varma, Rajkaran Varma and Mohammed Shabir. An NCB official said the seized Hashish is of very high quality. The market price of the drug is R3,500 per 10 gm, hence the seized amount would be worth around Rs 42 lakh.
Ordered from Jammu
NCB sources said an Andheri-based drug dealer had ordered the contraband from Jammu. However, he managed to get off the police radar when NCB officials arrested the trio from UP.
“The Andheri suspect is a big drug supplier and this consignment was a preparation for New Year parties,” said an NCB official.
Investigations have revealed that some members of a gang in UP visit Jammu, collect the drug consignment and return to UP. Then they would travel to Mumbai in trains, with the drugs concealed in their luggage.

“To avoid sniffer dogs at stations the accused would pack the drugs in layers. On reaching Mumbai, they would hand over the consignment to the concerned person. For every trip to Mumbai, the carriers would get R10,000, excluding their accommodation and food expenses,” said Kumar Sanjay Jha, zonal director, NCB. Members of the entire racket use multiple accounts for fund transactions.
Fifth seizure this year
NCB said this was the fifth time that Hashish has been seized this year. A total of 103.57 kg of the contraband has been seized by the Mumbai zone of Central Anti-narcotics agency this year.
