The demonetisation drive is bringing people at each other’s throats, literally. Frustrated with the current currency crunch to buy his daily commodities, a 30-year old man stabbed his neighbour after the latter asked him to return the Rs 300 that he had borrowed from him a few days ago.

The accused has been identified as Irshad Ali, who was arrested by the cops, while the victim, Shamim Akhtar has been admitted to the ICU of the Rajawadi Hospital.

Both of them are residents of Sevak Nagar in Sakinaka and have known each other for a long time.

Two weeks ago, Irshad had borrowed Rs 300 from Shamim. On November 17, Shamim asked Irshad to return the money. Irshad told the cops that he was facing a cash crunch due to demonetisation and he had promised to return Shamim’s money in few days.

Accused was drunk
An officer from Sakinaka Police Station said, “On November 18, Shamim asked Irshad to return his Rs 300 as he was facing a cash crunch. Irshad was drunk at the time and got angry. Then, he picked up a knife from a fish stall nearby and attacked Shamim. Irshad slashed his throat and Shamim began bleeding profusely.
