A man in his 40s was arrested on Saturday for allegedly duping three from Punjab of Rs 4.5 lakh on the pretext of giving them visas to Germany.
The Marine Drive police informed Hindustan Times that the accused Balbirsingh Mann, is a native of Haryana. He came in contact with one of the victims -- Tina Madan -- on Facebook and promised to give her as well as two others victims, Sandeep Singh and Sharanjeet Kaur, tourist visas to Germany. The victims came to Mumbai from Amritsar to meet a relative as well.
The HT report added that the trio met Mann in a hotel at Grant Road on December 7. The latter told them to meet him a couple of days later with the money near German consulate in Nariman Point, and added that he would get visa for them. Mann also told them to carry their files with documents for the visas.
As decided they victims and the accused met some days later. Mann took 5,500 euros and Rs 19,500, a total equivalent to Rs 4.5 lakh, as well as the documents from them. Mann then went in saying someone will come out with a token, and take them inside for the visas, the report added.
Mann, however, did not come back. They victims waited till evening after which they headed to the police station. They told cops that Mann had told him he stays at Bandra.
The HT report added that the police did not believe Mann would have given his real address and hence searched him in the Grant Road area. They were successful in finding him.
A police officer from Marine drive police station told HT, “He was arrested and produced before a magistrate court on Sunday and has been remanded to police custody till December 14. We have booked him under cheating sections of the IPC. We are trying to find out if he has a prior criminal record or if he has duped other persons using the same modus operandi.”
