In a city so familiar with incidents of chain-snatching, this one sure is out of the box. Two women were caught on Monday morning in Borivli when they tried to steal the gold chain of a senior citizen, not by snatching, but by snapping it open with a cutter.

A cut in time
The incident happened around 11.26 am on platform number 3 at Borivli station. The victim, 64-year-old Madhubala Moti, was about to board a Churchgate-bound train to go to Charni Road when the two accused, identified as Sharda Chavan (50) and Komal Kaavidhiya (24), who were standing near her, cut her chain. Before they could make their escape, however, two policewomen, attached to the special task force of Crime Branch, saw the act and nabbed them.

Police sources said this is the among the first few times they have come across women indulging in such a crime and definitely the first time that a cutter has been used instead of the item being snatched.

Spokesperson for the Government Railway Police Ritesh Ahir said the two women are being interrogated for getting more information about the new modus operandi.

Probe revelations
Their questioning so far has revealed the two are from Kathiawad in Gujarat and came to the city on a short holiday. Officers are yet to verify their claim that they are mother and daughter.

Sub-inspector of the task force Laxman Kale, who is investigating the case, said the chain the two tried to steal is valued at Rs 42,000 and weighed 14 grams.

“Chavan and Kaavidhiya are in police custody till October 1, and an extended period was sought to find out if the two are part of a gang and have been involved in more such cases, and also whether a cutter has been used before to steal a chain,” added Kale.

The policewomen who caught the accused, Meenakshi Gohil and Ursha Mayekar, had two months back arrested three women from Kalyan in a robbery case.
