A 41-year-old man was arrested by officials of the Matunga police station for allegedly raping a 39-year-old divorcee on the pretext of marrying and duping her of Rs 3 lakh. Police said the accused told the woman that he was one of the directors of a multinational bank.

Officials said Prakash Bhatia was arrested from his Chembur residence on Wednesday. They added Bhatia first met the woman in a lounge at Parel, following which they set up another meeting at a hotel in Dadar. “After befriending each other, Bhatia told the woman that he was a director of a multinational bank.
Promising marriage, Bhatia exploited the woman sexually and also took Rs 3 lakh from her. A former airhostess, the woman currently works as a jewellery designer,” said PI Arjun Sawant of the Matunga police station. It was after learning that Bhatia was married twice, the woman approached the Matunga police and registered an FIR against him. Bhatia was booked under Sections 376 (rape) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code.
“We have arrested Bhatia and learnt that he was working in Dubai for 15 years and had recently come to India. The bank where Bhatia claimed he was a director informed us that he has never worked for them. He is an IT professional,” said PSI Atul Adulkar of the Matunga police station. The woman also alleged Bhatia of hacking into her email account following which he was also booked under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act.u00a0
