According to the Kurla police, Mohommad Anwar Yusuf Nawab had been sacked from the Qatar consulate in 2010. Speaking to sunday mid-day, inspector S B Jagdale of Kurla police station said, “Nawab quit the Qatar consulate job in 2010. We are trying to find out whether he has duped other people too.”
The victim Mohommad Imran Ansari said, “My brother Faizan was looking for a job and a friend introduced us to Nawab who showed us his Qatar consulate ID card and handed us an appointment letter on the original letterhead of the Qatar consulate.” Nawab allegedly told the victim and his brother that the job entitled free trips to the Middle East before asking them to cough up R2.5 lakh as fees. “We believed him and paid the money,” Ansari said But when the office mentioned in the appointment letter turned out to be non-existent, the victims then approached the consulate to report the crime.
During investigations, the police learnt that Nawab was hiding in Hyderabad. Nawab was arrested from there on Wednesday. The accused has been booked under section 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) and 471 of the Indian Penal code and has been remanded to police custody till April 1.
