12 days after Apurva Chakravarty was attacked while travelling in a local train in the wee hours of the morning, police have arrested 43-year-old Vijay Pawar from a nationalised bank in Vasai, where he works as a peon.

Deepak Devraj, DCP Western Railway, GRP, said, “Pawar is not a history-sheeter. However, he was under debt after taking loans from different banks and had a habit of buying lottery tickets.”
On June 5, Chakravarty was on her way to work, travelling in the local from Bhayander to Dadar, at around 4.55 am. Pawar had entered the moving train between Mira Road and Dahisar station with a stick and hit her on the head. While the woman started bleeding profusely, Pawar snatched her jewellery worth around Rs 31,500 and fled.
The GRP could only find a grainy image of the attacker in the CCTV footage. They decided to go undercover to get information about the thief, and finally zeroed in on Pawar. After the arrest, he admitted to the crime.
“It was a pre-planned assault by him; he wanted to target a woman sitting alone in the local. His debts had reached close to R1 lakh and was constantly pressurised by banks when he decided to commit the crime,” informed a GRP officer.
