A 50-year-old man from Girgaum was arrested on Friday for sexually harassing his 17-year-old daughter for more than a year. The first-year college student had filed a complaint against her father at the VP Road Police station.

According to police officials the accused, who owns a hotel that has been given on rent, stays in a chawl along with his daughter, son and wife at Girgaum. An officer from VP Road police station said, “The girl in her statement claimed that since April 2013, her father kept touching her private parts while sleeping next to her. In the month of May, frustrated over the constant sexual harassment, she complained to her mother, who confronted the accused instead of taking any harsh step.”

The victim’s complaint to her mother angered the accused who assaulted her all the more. The girl, then, discussed her ordeal with her college friend, who took her to the police station and ensured that a complaint was registered. “On the basis of the girl’s complaint we have booked her father under sections 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 509 (Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of Indian Penal Code along with section 8 (Punishment for sexual assault) of the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act. The accused was present before the court on Friday and he has been remanded to police custody till July 17,” added the officer.
