A departmental inquiry is being conducted against a police sub-inspector who invited a 21-year-old air hostess for coffee and was flirting with her through WhatsApp messages and phone conversations.

The victim, who is already engaged to be married in August, complained to the additional superintendent of police of Palghar district.

The police sub-inspector of Nalasopara police station, identified as Purushottam Londe (31), had taken down the phone number of the air hostess after her mother took her to the station to register a complaint against a builder. Instead of helping the complainant, the cop asked the girl to have a cup of coffee and started flirting with her.

The victim recently started working as an air hostess. This is her first job after completing her studies. Her mother has been paying visits to the Nalasopara police station since the past two months to register a complaint against the builder. It was during this time that the victim also applied for a passport and met Londe at the police station. He had taken her number and started text messaging her on WhatsApp.

The victim said, “I respect the police, but this officer started flirting with me directly after taking my number. First he messaged me and offered me coffee. He even asked me to meet him. I told him to stop but kept messaging me. I told him that there is a huge age gap between him and me, but he said, ‘It’s only a 11-year difference’. I told him not to message me and that my wedding was fixed for August. I think this cop should be punished, but I’m scared he will take advantage of his position and harass me and my family. We even decided to shift from Nalasopara after the harassment.” Her mother added, “I had gone to Nalasopara police station and told officer Londe to stop these things and he replied that he only spoke with my daughter and had not slept with her yet. We also informed the senior inspector of the police station, but he didn’t help us.”

Additional SP Krishna Kokate said, “The victim’s mother complained to us about PSI Londe sending messages to her. We are conducting a departmental inquiry in this matter. The victim complained to us three days ago and she also submitted the evidence of the message list of Londe.”
