In May 2012, the 14-year old girl, originally from Ujjain, had ran away from her home to Punjab, as she wanted to stay with her brother. However, she boarded the wrong train and landed up in Mumbai. At the Bandra Terminus, she was accosted by a woman who called herself Sunita. The woman made her work under her for over 10 days.
When the girl demanded money for the work she had done, Sunita refused to pay her and in turn abandoned her at Bandra Terminus, telling her to go back home. At the station, the teenager met Raza and Hasmi, who took her to their residence, where Raza raped her.
Finding the girl wandering along Marine Drive later, a few railway cops took her in their custody, and registered a case at Bandra police station. The Bandra cops arrested the duo and subsequently a chargesheet was filed.
Both the accused were found guilty under sections 363 (kidnapping) 366 (kidnapping, abducting or inducing woman to compel her marriage) and 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty). In addition, Raza has been sentenced to life imprisonment under section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal code.
